“Ghost stories are very real in this land of scattered, lonely homes and primitive fears,” wrote the woodsman, an American named Elliot Merrick. One entry, in particular, caught his attention. In this case, he was doing research for a PhD at his current home in Thorold when he happened across the journal of a fur trapper who travelled the wilds of Labrador a century ago. Shoalts’s journeys are often preceded by months of research, as was the case a few years ago when he was living in Sudbury and buried himself in the stacks of Laurentian University to prepare for a trip across the Far North.
